Neonatology

Dr. Luke Damron, Marshall Health neonatologist and assistant professor at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

This medical specialty focuses on the care and treatment of critically ill and/or premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Neonatologists direct the babies' care, working with a team of nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, resident physicians, respiratory therapists and other caregivers. Very small, premature or congenitally ill babies are susceptible to potentially life-threatening complications, often related to the brain, lungs and digestive system. In addition to the advanced technology needed to care for the babies, the staff delivers care to the babies in the least stressful way, reducing pain and unnecessary stimulation whenever possible.
