Facilities & Programs

Hoops Family Children's Hospital (HFCH) is a hospital within a hospital, and it is located on the fifth floor of Cabell Huntington Hospital. Being part of a well-established hospital offers many advantages to our patients in the variety and quality of the services we provide.

Inpatient Units

Hoops Family Children's Hospital provides care for babies from birth through age 21 or longer, as appropriate. The units that make up HFCH include:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an intensive care unit that is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology to care for ill or premature newborn infants.

The Neonatal Therapeutic Unit (NTU) was the first of its kind in the state of West Virginia and one of the first in the United States. In this unit, the babies benefit most from the quiet, supportive hospital setting the NTU offers, with an experienced staff to provide the level of care these babies need.

Children receive 24-hour care in the family-friendly Pediatric Unit for conditions that range from fevers to more complex cases.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides comprehensive critical care to toddlers, children and teenagers who are critically ill or injured. Patients are often admitted from the Emergency Department or transported from other hospitals in the region.

Related Programs

Our Child Life Program is an essential component of HFCH, offering children and families a greater understanding of what to expect and empowering them with coping skills for anxiety and fear.

Here are some specialized services and programs for infants and children:

Rehabilitation Services: Staff members from speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy are trained and experienced in treating pediatric patients.

Home Health: The Home Health Department has been nationally recognized for quality and excellence, and they provide in-home services for infants and children.

Counseling: In addition to counseling for individuals, couples and families, the Counseling Center offers services for children.

NICU Follow-Up: Because premature infants may face more developmental delays than their full-term peers, this program provides follow-up assessments and recommends intervention if necessary.

When medical transportation from one hospital to another is needed, our Specialized Transport Teams are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide neonatal and pediatric critical care during the trip.

Outpatient Services

Many children are scheduled for outpatient services, such as physical therapy in the Rehabilitation Services Department or imaging in Radiology. Many— but not all— of these services are provided at Cabell Huntington Hospital or on campus. When your child is referred for outpatient services, be sure to confirm with the receptionist where the appointment takes place.

Outpatient Appointments

We are proud of the pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists that treat the babies and children who are admitted to HFCH. Their expertise is the backbone of the care we provide. It is important to remember that if you make an appointment with a doctor, you will be going to the physician's office, rather than Hoops Family Children's Hospital, for the appointment. When you make a doctor's appointment for your child, please confirm with the receptionist where the appointment takes place.

Hoops Family Children's Hospital partners with the Huntington YMCA, St. Mary’s Medical Center, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Cabell County Schools to support Kids in Motion, a fun and innovative exercise and nutrition program designed to improve the health of Tri-State area children.

Huntington's Kitchen is a community food center, where people come to learn, cook and experience everything that well-prepared food and healthy living have to offer. The facility has a fully equipped kitchen, and it's a great environment for cooking classes, on-site cooking demonstrations and fun, food-related events and activities. Huntington's Kitchen hosts nutrition and cooking classes for children periodically. Check the Huntington's Kitchen website for a full list of upcoming classes.
